Moab, located in southeastern Utah is not the most accessible place to reach, so why not make the journey part of the adventure by taking the train.

Overview

Taking the train used to be the primary mode of cross country transportation. Not only is it a great way to see the ever changing landscape, but riding along as a passenger is relaxing way to travel. If you are headed to Moab, Amtrak now offers a route that cuts right through Utah. It may not drop you directly in Moab, but the journey will be worth it.

Let Amtrak's California Zephyr line take you from the sky scrapers of Chicago over the rising peaks of the Rocky Mountains, through the red rock desert, and if you continue all the way to California, past the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Destinations

The California Zephyr line travels from Chicago to San Francisco via Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. In Utah, the train stops in Green River, Helper, and Salt Lake City and in Colorado the closest stop is in Grand Junction. 

If you are looking to rent a car and drive to Moab, neither Helper nor Green River offer car rental options, so Grand Junction, CO or Salt Lake City may be the best option.  Although, if you want to take the bus, the Greyhound does offer service to Green River, Salt Lake City, and Grand Junction.

  • Green River (GRI):
    Station Services: None, only a platform with no shelter, no ticketing counter, no Quik-Trak kiosk, and no checked baggage service.
    Distance to Moab: 52 miles
  • Helper (HER):
    Station Services: Station building with waiting room. No ticket office, no Quik-Trak kiosk, no baggage service.
    Distance to Moab: 123 miles
  • Salt Lake City (SLC):
    Station Services: Full services: Covered building, ticket office, checked baggage, payphones, restrooms.
    Distance to Moab: 233 miles
  • Grand Junction, CO (GJT):
    Station Services: Station building with waiting room. No ticket office, no Quik-Trak kiosk, no baggage service
    Distance to Moab: 113 miles

Rates are dependent on length of travel and type of accommodation aboard the train. See the Amtrak website for a listing of all the rates.

Schedules

The California Zephyr runs daily. Leaving Chicago at 2:00pm and arriving in Emeryville/San Francisco at 4:10pm. Departing Emeryville/San Francisco at 9:10pm and arriving Chicago at 2:50pm. Note: Times may vary slightly.
