Coyote Canyon

One of the most extreme 4x4 trails around, Coyote Canyon is a motorized route designated for modified rock crawler-type vehicles only. Access is very limited so make sure to plan ahead. Read More

Description

The one-way route rolls up one canyon and down another. It's less than a mile long but takes many a full day to navigate. This is not your average Moab four-wheel trail. There is no slickrock, but instead huge car size boulders and rocks that move around when you drive on them.

  • Distance: 0.65 miles.
  • Average Time: 1/2 to 8 hours.
  • Difficulty: Expert.
  • Trail Type: Loop.
  • Trailhead: From Moab head south on Hwy 191 for about 13 miles. Look for Black Ridge Road and park trailers at this junction. Coyote Canyon is 1.5 miles down Black Ridge Road.

Plan and Prepare

The local BLM office only allows access to Coyote Canyon with a free permit. One permit is required per group (up to 7 vehicles) and entry is allowed on Fridays and Saturdays from February 16 through November 30. One permitted group is allowed per day and reservations may be made up to 60 days in advance. More information on rules and permits. Please respect the rules of the trail so other 4-wheelers can enjoy it in the future.
