Monticello, Utah is a medium size town at the foot of the Abajo Mountains. The town's elevation of 7,069 feet makes Monticello cooler in the summer than other communities in the Four Corners Region.
Getting Here from Moab
Monticello is a one hour drive south of Moab on Highway 191. There are many points of interest along the way, so you may want to allow yourself more time. Break up the drive with stops at Hole 'n the Rock, Looking Glass Rock, Wilson Arch and Church Rock.
Manti La Sal National Forest, Abajo Mountains

Monticello is the closest town to the southern gate of Canyonland National Park. This region of the park is known as The Needles District. Here, sandstone spires fill Cedar Mesa with several shades of red. Exploration of the Needles District is made easy with a great trail system. There are rough roads for four-wheel drive vehicles and narrower trails for hiking and biking.
Newspaper Rock State Historic Park
On your way to Canyonlands National Park form Monticello; stop at Newspaper Rock to view a prime example of ancient petroglyphs.
